Shell accounts on foo

All NemoMembers get a shell account on the FooServer?, which you can use to read email, learn Unix or manage your websites (although the latter is more easily done using ftp).

SSH

To login you need a terminal emulator that supports the SSH (SecureShell) protocol. This is included in all Linux and FreeBSD distributions. For Windows we suggest using one of the following software packages:

CygWin
a large (100MB) port of most GNU tools to Windows
F-Secure
ssh client from Data-Fellows
PuTTY
a very small ssh client (with a complementary scp program)

A more complete listing of SSH clients can be found on Yahoo:

http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Communications_and_Networking/Software/Unix_Utilities/Ssh__Secure_Shell_/

Unix

After login you'll get a command line from the Unix shell. If you know nothing of Unix you're likely to feel quite lost (veteran users may skip the rest of this topic).

Here's a summary of a few useful Unix commands:

ls
list files (ls -l for long format)
cd
change directory (just cd will take you to your home directory)
mv
move/rename a file
passwd
change password
joe
an editor with WordStar-line command keys
man
manual pages for most commands

A few short tutorials on Unix that may be of help:
